Industry, Member Companies and Marketing Communications Professionals For Over
50 Years.
Inside ASE Tony Molla, vice president of industry affairs for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), spoke to ACC about the future of certified technicians, and how ACC members could spread the word about the importance of certification to the aftermarket. ASE was founded in 1972 as an alternative to mandatory technician licensing, and is a voluntary program endorsed by OEs and the aftermarket. Currently, there are 424,000 ASE-certified technicians, specializing in everything from automobiles to school buses. Earning an ASE certification isn't easy. Technicians must have at least two years hands-on work experience and pass one or more ASE exams. The certification is good for five years, and the credentials are accepted industry-wide. "Today ASE is trying to build its brand. We are focusing on consumer outreach programs, Team ASE racing, Team ASE rodeo, USA Today inserts, and shop marketing kits," Molla said. "In the future, ASE hopes to create an international test series, and to focus on career development and recruitment." To this end, Molla asked ACC members to promote the professionalism that the ASE Certification embodies, and to show company support for ASE in trade and consumer advertising by displaying the ASE logo.
